In July of 2005 Oprah's article in her “O” Magazine swept her readers, and soon the whole nation, into a Hoodia craze. Entitled “Diet Pills, The Next Generation”, the article mentioned the effects of the potent hoodia plant in her diet pill review citing it's effects as an appetite suppressant.
While there is no brand of hoodia endorsed by Oprah or her organization Harpo, her article sent shock waves throughout the country about the potential inside this tiny South African cactiform. Starting with the readers of O Magazine, the excitement over hoodia soon spread to several other news outlets and television shows.
Amazing to think that the popularity of hoodia was sparked by a woman who got her start working at a local radio station while attending Tennessee State University. Oprah Winfrey's story of success is simple remarkable considering in a prominently white male dominated industry. From co-hosting Chicago based half hour morning talk shows, to founding an entire entertainment network Oxygen,
Oprah's opinions have the power to inspire people, we're just thankful they took notice to such a humble yet extraordinary little plant named hoodia gordonii.
